Many of the tools and techniques that are part of the Six Sigma methodology are neither new nor unique to Six Sigma. However, the disciplined approach in using these tools combined with "best management" practices have led many manufacturing and service companies to embrace Six Sigma to increase their profit margins and delight their customers.
What are Six Sigma Green Belts and Black Belts?
One of the principle drivers of Six Sigma success has been its organizational structure consisting of Executive Leaders, Champions, and Six Sigma Belts. The Six Sigma Belts include Green Belts and Black Belts to indicate levels of proficiency.
ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï State University offers Six Sigma training courses at the Green Belt and Black Belt skill levels. Each belt certification can be achieved either through academic credit (option A) or as professional industry training (option B). Students opting for the professional industry training course may also earn academic credit.
A ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï Green Belt will have completed a minimum of 56 training hours (industrial training, option B) or 112 training hours (academic course work, option A), depending on the chosen training path. He or she will have applied the theory on many simulations, case studies and exercises. The Green Belt will also have used his/her knowledge gained on at least one small project in his/her company (multiple projects for academic course work) to show proficiency in using the tools and principles learned. Minitab Statistical Software is used to teach Six Sigma.
A ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï Black Belt will have completed a minimum of 112 training hours (industrial training, option B) or 160 training hours (academic course work, option A), depending on the chosen training path. He or she will have applied the theory on many simulations, case studies and exercises. The Black Belt will also have successfully completed one Six Sigma project at his or her company, showing real improvements. Minitab Statistical software is used to teach Six Sigma.
